Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba was the second Chief Minister of Melaka and the first to be elected by the people. His tenure as Chief Minister of Melaka was from 1 June 1959 to 5 October 1967. Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba was also made the nation’s Deputy Prime Minister on 5 May 1986, as well as Rural Development Minister in 1986. Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba was the longest in the government service since he won the first elections in 1955.
In order to remember his loyal service, the State Government of Melaka turned his residence (which was built in 1956) in Bukit Peringgit into the Tun Abdul Ghaffar bin Baba’s Gallery, which was open to public in 2006. Lately, this gallery has been renamed into Tun Abdul Ghaffar Baba’s Memorial and is now placed under the management of Department of Museum and Antiquity.
Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba’s Memorial is divided into two exhibition halls, where the bottom hall displays most of his personal belongings when he was assuming his role as the Chief Minister of Malacca, Cabinet Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. You can also see the master bedroom and dining hall which are still maintained in their original order.
Going up the small stairs is the other exhibition hall, this section of the memorial exhibits various souvenirs Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba received, his speeches, photos , books, his favourite television set and the original furniture and fittings that were used by his family. Video display regarding Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba’s life is also available here. You can get a close up look at the two bedrooms that were once used by his family.
This part of the memorial is actually the original house built in 1956. The house was built mainly from wood based on the the Malay traditional house concept. Later, when he was appointed the Chief Minister of Melaka, the house was renovated to accommodate more visitors.
